What do we mean when we use the phrase “Black Lives Matter”? What do we think when we hear it? We will unpack that and other issues related to the Black experience in this colloquium “Black Lives Matter at Ramapo.” We hope to engage in a series of lively, scholarly, and organic discussions that will allow faculty, staff and students to share in important conversations around race, justice, representation, and what the current state of race relations means for our campus. Can we set a new standard here at Ramapo?
Our goal is to begin a conversation in the Liberal Arts tradition around current political events, the national protests this summer, and the national elections this fall. The structure will be that of a teach-in, a short series of ´¼üve presentations by Ramapo professors based on their work, that links scholarship to activism and current events. The events will feature 30-minute presentations by faculty across diverse ´¼üelds of study who work with issues of race, representation, and social justice in their research, followed by extensive discussion for the second half. Each session will combine presentations on research with a discussion of strategies to teach and learn about the Black experience and advocate for structural change.

Registered voters are beginning to receive vote by mail ballots from New Jersey’s 21 counties. Have you received yours? Find out how to properly complete your ballot and how to mail it or where to drop it off here. Be sure that your vote will count.
Remember that today, October 13th, is the deadline to register to vote if you want to vote in the November 3rd General Election. Ramapo students have a voter registration rate of over 80%. Let’s push it even higher. Start the registration process here. With your vote, you can help elect public servants who best serve your interests and those of your community.
And your vote extends much further than just the Presidential race. Along with the ballot for president, Ôàô of Senate seats (including one in NJ) will be up for election, as well as all 435 U.S. House of Representative seats. We have 12 of those 435 congressional districts in NJ. All 12 of those seats will be decided on November 3rd. Beyond that, your vote can help to elect politicians on the state and local level who help shape local and state policies that directly affect you and your community. And in the state of New Jersey, you will have the chance to use your voice to directly affect policy-- by getting to vote on three ballot measures. Become a poll worker. Register to vote. Find out if you are registered.Visit my Vote Everywhere at Ramapo College.
Pledge to vote! Get together with your friends (while abiding by Covid safety precautions) and create your plan to vote.
