Join the Women’s Center and LGBTQ+ Services for the opening of Women’s Herstory Month featuring a keynote by author and photographer Penny Colman, who explored the question “Where are the women?” for more than 30 years by documenting historical landmarks dedicated to women. Her work resulted in a unique archive — the Penny Colman Collection of Historical Landmarks of Women — that now lives at Ramapo College.

Prior to Colman’s talk, Dr. Megan Williams, Coordinator of the Women's Center & LGBTQ+ Services, will offer some thoughts on the importance of women’s history before President Cindy Jebb will share remarks and read the annual proclamation. A moderated audience Q&A and community zine makerspace will follow Colman’s keynote. Refreshments will be served.

During the makerspace, attendees are invited to create a page for inclusion in a collaborative zine project inspired by the Penny Colman Collection. Single-page submissions (8.5” x 11”) should be dedicated to a woman or women who deserve an historical landmark — a statue, plaque, monument, or roadside marker. Whose contributions have shaped our past, present, and future yet they remain underrecognized?

Submissions may be written and/or visual and can take many forms, including (but not limited to): essays, collage, comics, drawings, and photographs. Submissions are open to all and due Monday, March 23.

Questions or accommodation requests? Email women@ramapo.edu or call (201) 684-7468.
